The Mountfield SP555 Review

The Mountfield SP555 is brought to us by one of the best selling manufacturer of petrol lawn mowers in the UK. But is this model of mower worth your hard earned cash?

As mentioned, Mountfield are one of the premier manufacturers of lawn mowers in the UK and the reason for that is quite simple : they produce bloody good mowers. The Mountfield SP555 is at the expensive end of what we normally review on this site but we’ve included it due to it’s popularity.

Note : Don’t confuse this model with the similarly named Mountfield SP555R. The mower we’re reviewing here is the basic rear wheeled version of the SP555 and not the Rear Roller version. If you want further information regarding the SP555R then you can do so by following this link.

Mountfield are renowned for the quality and the reliability of their gardening equipment for over 50 years and their petrol lawn mowers are no exception to this. And, fortunately, you can see this reflected in the SP555 straight out of the box. The steel cutting deck is well put together and feels strong; the assembly of the mower is intuitive and easy and the secondary features such as the foldable handles and ergonomics are all top notch.

The Mountfield SP555 is a self-propelled mower and thanks to its powerful 160cc Honda engine it performs this task admirably and still have the power to drive the big cutting blade underneath. The rear wheels are driven forward at about 3.7kph which in English is just over 2mph.

Ah, but can it make a good job of my lawn?

The rotary blade under the mower can do a 53cm cut in one sweep which, at the time of writing this review, is the widest cut that we’ve seen so far in a mower we’ve reviewed. It’s hard to stress just how big this difference is, even when compared to a 46cm McCulloch M46-125 for instance. 7cm doesn’t seem like much and in and of itself, it isn’t. But when it adds up over a 10m wide lawn it becomes significant and given that Mountfield suggest that the SP555 is good for lawn areas up to 55m x 55m, the time saving and efficiency those extra 7cm give is huge.

The cutting height can be adjusted by a single lever and grants 9 preset settings of between 30 and 70mm. We’d have liked this to be a little wider in range but the 9 settings give good control over the height you would want the mower to cut at.

The Mountfield SP555 has a 3-in1 Combi System for the discharge of the grass cuttings. Firstly, you can utilise the mammoth 70 litre collection box that sits on the back of the mower. Alternatively, you can remove this collector and turn the SP555 into a rear discharge mower very easily. Finally, the mower comes with a Mulching option which produces an excellent finished lawn.

So it’s a bit dear – but is it worth the extra cost?

It’s very easy for us to say yes! Absolutely! because ultimately the SP555 is a fantastic mower. But to have and to own that fantastic mower then you’ll be paying almost double the amount of some very good other self-propelled mowers.

So to answer the question asked is a bit of a double edged sword where one side is quality and the other side is cost. If money was taken out of the equation and my regular mowing lawn was medium or large in size, I’d take the Mountfield SP555 every time than those cheaper options. Is that a cop out? Probably.

Ultimately, if you have the money and the mower isn’t going to be wasted on only mowing a small back lawn, then get one. If you do have only a small lawn to mow and that’s all you’ll ever do, then the Mountfield SP555 is probably a bit of overkill whether you have the money or not. If you have a big lawn but not the money, then it’s time to beg, borrow or steal as you’ll always be left wondering what if?
