The McCulloch M46-125 Review

The McCulloch M46-125 is a lower mid-range petrol lawn mower from the highly reputable McCulloch who produce a wide range of quality petrol lawnmowers.

The features you see in the at a glance box above tell you only part of the story when it comes to the M46-125. They may look ok for a mower that is priced as it is but there isn’t that much of a step up when compared to the cheaper cousin, the M40-450C which we reviewed recently.

One thing that us certain and something that we applaud across the full range of McCulloch lawnmowers is the quality that they like to attain and this mower doesn’t disappoint in that regard. From the solid steel cutting deck, the accessibility of features and the attention to detail all meeting McCulloch’s usual standards, it’s business as usual in that respect.

The McCulloch M46-125 comes with a foldable handle which means it will easily fit into your shed or storage area once you’re finished with it and, unlike some of the earlier models, comes with a soft hand grip and a handle height adjuster which should cover most people who will use the mower. There is also a handy hose connector which allows easy cleaning before it goes into the shed.

Even at this current price level, you’re still relying on yourself to push the mower forward as the engine doesn’t supply any power to the rear wheels. Like many mowers from this manufacturer, however, the McCulloch M46-125 is quite light at 28kg in weight and so it’s easy to push and turn as you go about cutting your lawn.

Let’s look at how the McCulloch M46-125 mower deals with the lawn

Like many mowers from McCulloch, the M46-125 zips across the lawn with ease and by utilising its 46cm blade width, it can gobble up a small garden in next to no time. When it comes to the medium sized lawn, the story is pretty much repeated.

With cutting heights of between 30mm and 80mm it won’t be mowing any bowling lawns, but the range is wide enough to grant a great variety in cutting heights with its 5 height settings which are adjusted by using a 4-point system around the wheels. This is a little nit-pick of mine – I wish more petrol lawn mowers would use a single lever to change the height systems and although a personal gripe, it’s a small one where the McCulloch M46-125 is concerned.

There is a 50 litre hard grass box plugged onto the back of the mower which is easily removed when it’s time for emptying though this is your only option when it comes to grass discharge. The size is adequate and should be enough for most people and their gardens.

A Briggs & Stratton 125cc engine, which is easily fired up with a starter cord, is where the M46-125 draws its power from and it’s just about enough for the mower. The slightly smaller engine than other McCulloch models means that only an 0.8 litre fuel tank is needed which saves a little weight on the mower.

Here’s a little video showcasing the McCulloch M46-125 petrol lawn mower.

Is the McCulloch M46-125 worth it?

It’s certainly a very good mower for the price, but I would have expected a little bit more. Yes, the 46cm cutting blade is excellent and the speed in which you can mow the lawn is great, but to me, this is the only real step up from cheaper models that McCulloch produce.

Yes, there are little details which make me happy, certainly the hose attachment to make cleaning the mower after use a little bit easier. The soft grip is nice as well as the ability to finally adjust the height of the handles. But, I don’t know, there’s something missing which I can’t place my finger on.

Don’t get me wrong – if all I had in my shed to mow my garden shed was the McCulloch M46-125, I wouldn’t be sad as it’s a great mower in and of itself, but I think there are better at its current price.
