The McCulloch M40-450C Review

The McCulloch M40-450C is a low priced cheap mower brought to you by a renowned manufacturer of high quality lawn mowers. But does that low price mean a below standard lawnmower? Well, let’s take a look.

The list of features you see above, on paper certainly, doesn’t look too bad when judged by themselves although we can see the M40-450C falls short compared to the more expensive (and sometimes much more) models you’ll find here and elsewhere, but then given the price, that probably isn’t too much of a surprise.

McCulloch make robust and quality lawnmowers and this offering is no different with its black steel cutting deck and despite its relatively light weight. Out of the box, the mower was very easy to assemble and the petrol and oil caps were accessed easily enough for filling. The mower comes with fold away handles which make storage a breeze, although those handles could be a little high for those of a shorter disposition and there is no way to adjust them.

This is a push propelled mower which means you have to provide the drive to move it forward over your lawn. Fortunately, as already mentioned, the McCulloch M40-450C is a relatively light mower which makes it very easy to push and to manoeuvre. In addition, the mower comes with rear wheels as opposed to a roller so you can forget about the classic stripe pattern we all admire. Once again though, given its low price compared to more costly options, the lack of these two features isn’t too surprising.

The Operational Features Of The McCulloch M40-450C

The mower comes with a 40cm cutting width which is at the narrow end of most petrol lawn mowers. The M40-450C is, according to the blurb, designed for small to medium sized lawns and whereas I agree that 40cm is more than enough for a small lawn, it might just be a little too small for the upper medium sized lawns.

The cutting height of between 25mm and 80mm is a pretty good range and with 5 adjustable settings you should be able cut to the height that you desire. One thing should be noted though is that wheel heights needs to be set individually rather than with a single one-height-fits-all lever.

The McCulloch M40-450C comes with two discharge options as the mower cuts the grass. The 50 litre fabric grass collector that sits on the back of the lawnmower is very easy to attach and should be sufficient for the smaller lawn plus a bit more. Alternatively, the collector can be removed if you wish and the mower will happily discharge the cut grass from the rear.

Finally, we come to the 140cc Briggs & Stratton engine that sits at the heart of the mower. It’s a gutsy little thing that is more than sufficient in providing the power to the cutting blades and is easily started with a simple pull cord. There is a 0.9 litre petrol tank that is easily accessed when it comes to filling up and should be more than enough for most lawns.

Our Conclusion On The McCulloch M40-450C

As alluded to a couple of times in this review, the McCulloch M40-450C might not win any prizes for the best features a petrol lawn mower can have, but for the price? It’s a brilliant little mower and highly recommended for many everyday garden lawns people have at home. For the larger lawn, it may be wise to look at slightly more expensive mowers that can cut a bit more in the same time, but even then, if you’re looking for a cheap option, why not?

For the professionals out there with lots of lawns to cut of various sizes. Nope. I’m sorry, you’ll probably have to look elsewhere despite how good the M40-450C is.

Overall, if you’re looking for a little cheap petrol lawn mower to easily cut the small garden lawn on a Sunday, then you can’t go too far wrong with the McCulloch M40-450C.
